My Experience With Myths, A Learning Journey
I most recently took part in a myth learning assignment and prior to participating in the creation of my own myth, I had very little knowledge of the characteristics and elements incorporated in myths. As far as I knew myths were generally very old stories that would usually address some kind of world wonder. I will say that studying myths and its elements definitely fostered a new sense of understanding for the subject. I was able to purposefully deploy myth tactics in the development of my myth. It was truly an eye opening experience that has not only enhanced my writing skills but also augmented the way I watch and understand films, specifically those that incorporate mythical characters such as the most recent Marvel Films that incorporate characters such as Thor and Loki who both express characteristics of a myth. As a matter of fact they are derived from myths!
Beyond that, I learned a ton of amazing strategies for teaching myths when I become a teacher. I really enjoyed the different approaches my classmates evoked in their projects along with the activities they provided for the class. I will be applying some of those in my classroom when addressing the topic of myths. I also think it was nice to assign it as a group assignment because it is such a multilayered subject. I think this would allow my future students to develop collaboration skills as well as build a more comfortable learning environment among the students. Overall, this experience has been an insightful encounter with myths, and I will use the knowledge I gained to enhance the learning experience of my future students.
I have attached a copy to my personal myth website: Death the Myth
Hello Gerardo, aka Freedumb writer. I enjoyed reading your myth about the creation of death. The first time I encountered death, I was eighteen. I didn’t know the person, but my family did, so we went to pay our respects. That experience made me think about death more, though I assumed it wouldn’t be something I’d have to face again until my fifties. I was wrong–over the years, more loved ones began to pass, and funerals became as common as weddings and baby showers. Your myth gave me a fresh perspective on why we have death, and I appreciate that insight. My myth also explores the concept of death, but from a different perspective. I enjoyed seeing everyone’s creative process, both in the group project and in their individual myths. Working in groups made learning about myths more relatable and engaging, and the individual myths showcased a lot of creativity.

Hi there Gerardo! Learning about the histories of myths and the supposed purposes for their creation, whether they be to explain a natural phenomena such as rain or a human emotion is very important to both studying a myth and making one yourself. As you mentioned it helped you understand the subject better and aided in the creation of your individual myth. You conducted research into Thor and Loki, and the Norse pantheon opened your eyes more to the accuracy of their Marvel characterizations which is pretty neat! I agree with your idea of having myth group projects for students to do as it would both help their cooperative skills with each other and foster better camaraderie. Also myths are quite educational because they always have some form of lesson that they teach, which I also believe is something important for students to learn as well. Thanks for sharing your experience regarding the myth projects Gerardo, I really enjoyed reading them!
